NEW OPERATING THEATRES

Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin has opened new Operating Theatres and a new Sterile Services Department.
There are seven new state-of-the-art theatres.  Included in the new development are two Cardiac Theatres, an Ultra Clean Orthopedic Theatre and two Laser Theatres.

Associated with the theatres is an eleven bedded Post Anaesthetic Care Unit and a new Sterile Services Department, equipped to an extremely high standard and includes the first purpose-built medical equipment decontamination unit in Ireland. The bright, modern, highly equipped theatres provide attractive, child friendly surroundings, where children will receive expert care from highly skilled and dedicated health care professionals. They replace theatres which have been in use since 1956.

Included in the equipment purchased in relation to this project was a major investment in cardiac surgery and orthopedic equipment. This included bypass equipment and a computer guided surgery system which allows for the introduction of safe treatment procedures previously not an option in Ireland for children with a number of spinal and other conditions.

The development features specially commissioned art work by the Ark Cultural Trust.  A time capsule sponsored by Heart Children Ireland has been placed in the ground in one of the internal courtyards within the development.

NEW DAY UNIT

Equipping and fit out of a new Day Surgical Unit adjacent to the new Theatres has been completed.  Accommodation includes child friendly pre-operative play/waiting area and a ten bedded post-operative ward.

DESIGN BRIEF FOR OUTLINE DEVELOPMENT CONTROL PLAN (DCP)DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR NEW CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

Our Lady's Hospital in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Health Authority and the Department of Health & Children are in the process of planning for the re-development of the hospital.  A Design Team has been appointed to draw up an Outline Development Control Plan for this stage of the Project.  Completion date for receipt of same is September 2004.

The Minister for Health & Children (DOH&C) his representatives, the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA), parents groups and the hospital, including Committee of Management, are totally committed to this project.

This can be seen through the extensive work, energy, dedication, enthusiasm and commitment which everybody has given to this project to date and which will continue in the future.
The work on this project requires a partnership approach involving each of the different stakeholders working together to provide a state of the art new hospital which will meet the needs of children for the future.

ONGOING URGENT DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

In parallel with this essential planning activity, the hospital is pressing ahead actively with a number of specific development projects to meet acute requirements. These include:

Cardiology Development  -  This is an interim solution.  Its facilities will be broken into three categories - a) OPD service, b) Reserved In-patient beds, and c) improved non-evasive diagnostic area.  This project is in the initial planning process.

Haematology/Oncology Interim Building - Design Team appointed, location, etc.  Procurement Stage to commence shortly.  It is hoped that works will commence in October/November 2004.   .

Radiology - MRI/Nuclear Medicine - Design team have been appointed.  Procurement process to commence shortly.  It is hoped that works will commence October/November 2004.

MEDICAL TOWER

This development is currently being built which will accommodate state of the art facilities for the following services:

  • Neurology Department: High-standard accommodation for diagnostics, clinical consultation and patient/parent reception, as well as support facilities for an extensive outpatient service.
  • Gastroenterology/Hepatitis C: It will provide an outpatient service and allow for centralization in one unit to meet patient and family requirements.
  • Infectious Diseases Unit: Enhanced ambulatory service for patients with infectious diseases. The new unit will include extra clinics, clinical assessment rooms and a parent and child education centre.
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Ambulatory care for patients presenting with cystic fibrosis and other respiratory problems.
  • Haematology/Oncology: Out-patient clinic rooms, office facilities and telemedicine/conference facility will be located in this new build.
  • This project is due for completion in September 2004.

    BIO CONTAINMENT UNIT

Recent events have highlighted to the Department of Health and Children and the Eastern Regional Health Authority the need for an appropriate unit to manage high risk infectious diseases.  The need for such a facility is further underlined by the closure of the infectious disease facility at Cherry Orchard hospital; which has resulted in the lack of a designated facility for infectious diseases for the paediatric population in the Eastern Regional Health Authority area.  Our Lady's Hospital is working with the Health Board on a project to address this issue, with outline proposals currently with the Public Health Department of the Eastern Regional Health Authority.

    HELIPAD

In line with the expected development associated with the issuing of the Department of Health report on the HEMS medical services the Hospital is actively examining its helipad provision to ensure that it continues to maintain a helicopter landing facility in line with recommended practices that will allow us to continue to provide an emergency transport service to the paediatric population throughout the country and indeed at times internationally.

    COMMUNICATIONS

The Hospital is continually actively monitoring tele-communications developments. The hospital's aim is to ensure that the Hospital takes full advantage of opportunities available to ensure that they can obtain a maximum optimal efficient tele-communications service within budgetary restrictions to meet the needs of our patients and their families.

A number of strategies are been investigated at the moment including automatic speech recognition to ensure faster redirection of telephone calls to the main switch to specific departments.

    PARENT FACILITIES

Funds provided by The Late Late Show has allowed the hospital to purchase a further "Home from Home" house and refurbishment works are almost complete. Building works are also underway on the hospital campus for a Ronald McDonald house funded by the Ronald McDonald Foundation which will provide 12 family accommodation units.  This project is due for completion in September 2004.  This will bring the total accommodation for parents and families to 49 parent bedrooms (16 of which are double bedrooms) within the hospital and 20 family units off-site.

    TELEMEDICINE FACILITY

St Jude Children Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA is the world premier centre for research and treatment of potentially fatal childhood diseases. Discussions have taken place with a view to closer relationships between the two hospitals in clinical and research matters in what would be the first collaboration between the world famous St Jude and a European hospital.

We welcome the decision of the newly formed "Ireland's Children for Children" foundation to make one of their projects the raising of €1ml to fund a telemedicine link for OLHSC.  This would enable access to a wider area of expertise in treating serious illness in children.  Such a link allows immediate contact between the hospitals and simultaneous viewing of x-rays and laboratory tests.  It also enables joint conferences and wider access to centres of excellence throughout the world.

We also welcome the decision of the Minister for Health & Children, Micheal Martin to grant €250,000 to Our Lady's Hospital to facilitate this collaboration between the two hospitals.
