LE Eithne officially twins with Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin

Children attending Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin enjoyed a Fun Day on board the Irish Navy Vessel LE Eithne today (Wednesday 16 ^th February 2005). The special occasion marked the official twinning of the LE Eithne with Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children. Brian Lenihan TD, Minister for Children was present to greet the children.

Commander Mark Mellett and the ship's company entertained the children of Our Lady's with a tour of the ship and lunch at the Captain's table. The children were greatly impressed with the communication technology on board. They learned about sea rescue operations including the role of specialised divers.

Later the children returned to the hospital in a convoy of ambulances and fire engines compliments of the Civil Defence. Some of the ship's crew surprised the children back at the hospital with a special visit later in the afternoon.

"The children had a fabulous day today," said Gerry O'Dwyer, Chief Executive. "We thank the Irish Navy for their ongoing generous support to the hospital. They have provided great excitement for our sick children."

Geraldine Regan, Director of Nursing said that the ongoing commitment by the naval personnel and recruit classes in helping out children's wards around the country was greatly appreciated.

"This twinning arrangement will incorporate fun days for sick children and families on board the LE Eithne and will assist in fundraising activities in aid of the Hospital" said Commander Mark Mellett. "We are delighted to be associated with Our Lady's which is committed to providing each child and family with the highest standard of health care."
